151 Years of Nevada

This is the first year that I’ve lived outside of the state of Nevada for any extended period of time. Although I’m living in the wonderful state of Washington, I can’t help but miss my home state a little on Nevada Day – where the state is so prideful of commemorating their admission to statehood, that on the observed day (last Friday in October) you may even get the day off.

Growing up you may remember getting two day’s of trick-or-treating… Yes – you heard right. Until 2000, Halloween was observed in Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County, and Storey County (the capital and surrounding counties) on October 30 as to not get in the way of Nevada Day celebrations. Growing up in Carson, you could go trick-or-treating on October 30th and when Halloween rolled around the following day, you could head about 30 miles north to Reno for a second round of Halloween fun. This year – Halloween was brought back again in the same fashion.

I hope everyone has a safe Halloween – and if you happen to be in Nevada, don’t forget to celebrate Nevada Day as well! Home means Nevada!
